Could W be impeached? Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

At first it may seem to outrageous to be true, and for the moment it is. However, the momentum is building. According to a poll conducted in October 2005, voters support impeaching the president 50% to 44% if it is found that he was dishonest about his reasons for going to war. This number has been increasing rapidly, up from just 42% in June 2005. It is also much higher than public support for Clinton's impeachment was in 1998.

Of course, George W Bush will never be impeached as long as there is a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. However, there is a growing possibility that the Republicans will lose this majority in the 2006 elections. Because of rising anti-war sentiment, Tom Delay's and Bill Frist's ethical problems, Bush's declining approval ratings and disapproval of the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina, the approval rate of the GOP-controlled Congress has fallen to only 29%. The last time Congress' approval rating was this low was in 1994, when the Democrats had majorities in both the House and Senate. Republicans were able to use the low approval ratings to win 54 seats and majority party status during the 1994 elections. In the coming elections, Democrats only need to gain 16 seats to become the majority. If the GOP approval rating does not recover within the next several months it seems very likely this will occur.
