The end of the Cold War worldwide works only between big powers, but a Cold War still persists on the Korean Peninsula.

NYtimes: Officials Say U.S. Wiretaps Exceeded Law

The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in "overcollection" of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

Nobody could have predicted that the government would start up a huge surveillance dragnet, just because the government got caught using beam splitters at telecommunication hubs to access everyone's electronic communications....

Suddenly, everyone in the Republican party is rushing to claim that they are "libertarian" or "libertarian-leaning". Many of these Republicans are the same politicians who instituted or cheerled the installation of a "national security" police state and worked for a unitary executive presidency. In case anyone out there is confused, I've put up a few examples of people who really do have libertarian leanings, as well as a list of "sunshine libertarians" who are desperate to hide from a now hated party id and governing philosophy.

Libertarianism is a big umbrella - there are pure libertarians, right-leaning and left-leaning libertarians, etc. There are not, however, authoritarian or jingoistic libertarians.

I don't recall Glenn Reynolds or Mark Steyn complaining that the FBI, for virtually the entire Bush administration, was systematically abusing its new National Security Letters authorities under the Patriot Act to collect extremely invasive information, in secret, about Americans who had done nothing wrong. Russ Feingold's efforts to place limits and abuse-preventing safeguards on these Patriot Act powers in 2006 attracted a grand total of 10 votes in the Senate -- none Republican.
