The end of the Cold War worldwide works only between big powers, but a Cold War still persists on the Korean Peninsula.

The UNSC-crafted UN Command itself is a signatory to the Korean Armistice Agreement.

Any hostile act by the UNSC immediately means the abrogation of the Armistice Agreement.

The world will soon find out how the army and people of the DPRK will stand up against the high-handed and get-it-alone approach of the UNSC in defending its dignity and sovereignty.

The U.S. is keen on using a catchphrase “Carrot and stick.”

It would be better for the “Donkey” of the U.S. Democratic Party to lick the carrot.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world continues to give N. Korea free food & other aid... for some reason.

Mass warrantless spying on Americans - Nobody could have predicted....

NYtimes: Officials Say U.S. Wiretaps Exceeded Law

The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in "overcollection" of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

Nobody could have predicted that the government would start up a huge surveillance dragnet, just because the government got caught using beam splitters at telecommunication hubs to access everyone's electronic communications....

Treasury Department Issues Emergency Recall Of All US Dollars

libertarian vs. "libertarian"

Suddenly, everyone in the Republican party is rushing to claim that they are "libertarian" or "libertarian-leaning". Many of these Republicans are the same politicians who instituted or cheerled the installation of a "national security" police state and worked for a unitary executive presidency. In case anyone out there is confused, I've put up a few examples of people who really do have libertarian leanings, as well as a list of "sunshine libertarians" who are desperate to hide from a now hated party id and governing philosophy.

Libertarianism is a big umbrella - there are pure libertarians, right-leaning and left-leaning libertarians, etc. There are not, however, authoritarian or jingoistic libertarians.

actually libertarian

Where were you when Mark Klein exposed the government's illegal mass surveillance of Americans by piping directly into Internet backbone traffic?

Where were you when innocent people were being rounded up and imprisoned indefinately without even being charged of a crime?

Where were you when government leaders were exposed as torturers?

Where were you when the secret CIA prisons and the practice of extraordinary rendition was exposed?

Where were you when Bush was digging us down into a trillion dollar deficit hole fighting preventive wars, giving shady corporations massive no-bid contracting deals, and cutting taxes on real estate speculators?

Where were you when Bush shoved an $800 billion TARP scheme through Congress and nationalized huge megacorporate banks? Is it all okay, so long as it is a Republican?

Where were you when Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, Gonzo, et. al. were giving the finger to Congress, separation of powers, the rule of law, etc?

Sorry, I'm not buying your pseudo-libertarian bullshit.
You sorry twats can't even seem to differentiate between "taxation without representation" and a newly popular democratically elected legislature trying to pick up the pieces from your ill-fated crony corporatist economic adventures.
Glenn Greenwald - the ultimate reaping of what one sows:

I don't recall any complaints from Jonah Goldberg or Michelle Malkin. I don't recall Glenn Reynolds or Mark Steyn complaining that the FBI, for virtually the entire Bush administration, was systematically abusing its new National Security Letters authorities under the Patriot Act to collect extremely invasive information, in secret, about Americans who had done nothing wrong. Russ Feingold's efforts to place limits and abuse-preventing safeguards on these Patriot Act powers in 2006 attracted a grand total of 10 votes in the Senate -- none Republican.

My best stab at the lyrics:

Is there some kind of confusion?
(Went to screw you) [?]
(say they made love)[?]

Get another plan
Get another plan
Get another plan
'Cause this one's not working
(x2)

You said you would
Respect me, protect me and wait
My mommie she told me
To always be a lady
But its too late

I need another plan
Need another plan
Need another plan
'Cause this one's not working
(x2)

You keep me up every night
Just wanna scream fuss and fight
I want you dead
Now we're in bed
Now I'm so in love

Taxes are being raised on the wealthiest 1.1% of Americans.

98.9% of Americans will not have their taxes raised.

In fact, over two-thirds of Americans will have their taxes CUT.

The net of all of the tax changes is a small cut overall, as well.

You might not know that, though, if you've been watching cable news lately - Republicans have shouted "OMG THEY'RE GONNA RAISE EVERYONE'S TAXES AHHH!" so many times that the meme has been adopted by the villagers as truth, facts be damned.

Arkansas: Doing it wrong

Olbermann on Bank Bailout: Enough!

Courageous Man Refuses To Believe He Has Cancer

Dare to dare

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. Those who risk nothing do nothing, have nothing, and are nothing.

They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live. Chained by their attitudes, they are slaves, they have forfeited their freedom.

I recently sent a message to Senator Pryor, Senator Lincoln, and even to John Boozman, urging them to support Obama"s stimulus package. I got a response back from Senator Pryor. It"s just a generic form letter, but it"s nice to know that someone is listening to - or at least tallying up - the voices of the people.

I know my voice has, at best, an extraordinarily small effect on what happens to our country. Another line drawn on the tally sheet under one of the two columns by an intern, perhaps.

But I"m not cynical or foolish enough to think my voice doesn"t matter at all. Every vote and every voice matters. 0.0001% is a small number, yet infinitely larger than nothing at all. And I"ll keep on tilting at the windmills as long as it takes, and I hope you do too. I hope every one of us does. After all, "nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices, calling for change."
February 19, 2009

Dear Mr. Joseph,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the economy and the recovery plan. I appreciate hearing from you.

I want you to know that I am very concerned about Arkansans keeping their jobs, securing their retirement and savings accounts, and paying for their daily needs. In the last year the nation lost an estimated 3.4 million jobs bringing unemployment to a level higher than any time in the last 25 years. In Arkansas, many layoffs have been announced by such mainstays of our economy as Wal-Mart, Dillard"s, and Alltel. In addition to job losses, many in America and Arkansas are seeing their wages decrease or remain stagnant. This has contributed to further problems in the housing market, decreased consumer confidence, and more layoffs. Because there has yet to be any sign that the economy will make a substantial recovery in the near future, I believe the government must act to break this self-destructive cycle.

While there is no clear, immediate answer to our nation"s economic problems, I voted for the President"s recovery package because it provides investments to create and sustain jobs in the short-term and upgrade our infrastructure in the long-term, mitigate the effects of a stagnant housing market, provides investment incentives to small businesses to create jobs, and gives assistance to those most affected by the recession to spur consumer confidence. The Administration has estimated that the recovery package will create or save approximately 31,000 jobs in Arkansas.

First, investing in our infrastructure and in job training will have positive short- and long-term effects in our state by putting Arkansans to work rebuilding our roads and bridges and by giving workers who have lost their jobs new skills to meet the demands of a 21st Century workforce. The recovery package provides $351.5 million to fund highway construction projects in Arkansas that the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department have determined are "ready to go." Construction of these "ready to go" projects will allow us to maximize both short-term job creation and long-term growth. It also allocates $7.2 billion to upgrade and expand our nation"s broadband infrastructure in rural and underserved areas such as in Arkansas, to maintain our competitive technology and innovation advantages. In addition, the recovery package provides $11.1 million to Arkansas for job training and to help match those people who need jobs with those who are looking for workers.

Second, the recovery plan must address the stagnant housing market where much of our economic problems originated. In an effort to stabilize housing prices, mitigate the effects of the stagnant housing market, and still encourage first time homebuyers, the recovery package will extend and increase the first time homebuyer tax credit to $8,000 until December 1, 2009.

Third, a recovery plan must provide investment incentives for the backbone of the American economy: small businesses. The recovery package allows small businesses to deduct more business expenses from taxes, excludes gains from the sale of certain small business stock from being taxed, and provides incentives to hire unemployed veterans. In addition, the recovery package contains provisions intended to give small businesses access to more capital by reducing or eliminating various lender and borrower fees and making Small Business Administration loans more affordable and accessible. I believe these provisions will allow small businesses to create jobs and contribute substantially to the strengthening of the economy.

Last, a recovery plan must help those that have been most affected by the recession, including Arkansans who are being strained to the breaking point because of declining incomes and fewer job opportunities. In order to alleviate some of these pressures facing Arkansans, the recovery package provides a refundable tax credit of up to $400 for individual workers earning less than $75,000 in adjusted gross income and $800 for married couples earning less than $150,000 in adjusted gross income. In addition, seniors, disabled veterans, other disabled workers, and SSI recipients will receive a one-time credit of $250. To help those who have lost their jobs during the recession, the package provides up to $151 million to Arkansas to provide additional unemployment insurance and $223 million for supplemental nutrition assistance. I believe this relief will help jumpstart our economy by getting money into the hands of those who are most likely to spend it quickly.

You may also be interested to know that the website www.recovery.gov has been established to help you track where your tax dollars are being spent. While I know this legislation is not perfect, I believe that the government must step in to provide necessary investments to create jobs, spur economic growth, and get the economy moving for all Americans. I am optimistic it will provide the jolt to our economy that we need now and for the future.

I will be sure to keep your thoughts and recommendations in mind as the Senate addresses legislation aimed at economic recovery and long-term growth. Again, thank you for contacting me. I value your input. Please do not hesitate to contact me or my office regarding this or any other matter of concern to you.

Sincerely,

Mark Pryor
United States Senate

Still haven"t heard back on reigning in the "state secrets privilege" farce from Pryor - Nor have I received any response from Boozman. And, of course, the great Senator Blanche Lincoln never responds to anyone - not even with the casual overture of having a staff member fire off an e-mail to the constituants" email list.

It took me an hour to pry my frozen car door open today.

I finally got my car open and my windows scraped, just as temperatures were falling back under freezing while the sleet kept pouring down.

While I was prying the door open, I heard and saw huge trees smashing down - about one every five minutes. Some fell onto empty ground, some onto roads, some on parked cars and some on people's houses and apartments.

Every time a tree fell, I heard the loud violent crash. Every crash of the failing trees carried with it the distinct possibility that the tree had landed on an occupied house or car. It seemed as though nature itself had determined to play Russian Roulette with the homes and lives of my neighbors.

All of that I heard, in just one hour on one block. And that was before the refreeze and the extra sleet.

Now I am in Siloam, relatively safer, and fortunate enough to have family and shelter and electricity.

But I can'sleep - each time I hear a tree creaking or moaning or branches giving way is like a haunting reminder of all of the people still trapped in their homes, surrounded by frozen trees on the verge of collapse, some of whom will fall onto houses, through roofs and then onto whatever is beneath those roofs.

Each creek is a reminder that somewhere else a tree has just fallen, and one more person might just have been killed.

I don't know exactly why I'm writing all of this, or who I'm writing it too - if anyone. I just hope the worst has passed, and that all of you are safe and sound with power.
In the Orient young bulls are tested for the fight arena in a certain manner. Each is brought to the ring and allowed to attack a picador who pricks them with a lance. The bravery of each bull is then rated with care according to the number of times he demonstrates his willingness to charge in spite of the sting of the blade. Henceforth will I recognize that each day I am tested by life in a like manner. If I persist, if I continue to try, if I continue to charge forward, I will succeed.

I will persist until I succeed.

I was not delivered unto this world in defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion and I refuse to talk, walk, to sleep with the sheep. I will hear not those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious. Let them join the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny.

I will persist until I succeed.

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal. Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet success hides behind the next bend in the road. Never will I know how close it lies unless I turn the corner.

Always will I take another step. If that is of no avail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.

I will persist until I succeed.

Henceforth, I will consider each days effort as but one blow of my blade against a mighty oak. The first blow of my blade may cause not a tremor in the wood, nor the second, nor the third. Each blow, of itself, may be trifling, and seem of no consequence. Yet from childish swipes the oak will eventually tumble. So it will be with my efforts of today.

I will be liken to the rain drop which washes away the mountain; the ant who devours a tiger; the star which brightens the earth; the slave who builds a pyramid. I will build my castle one brick at a time for I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will never consider defeat and I will remove from my vocabulary such words and phrases as quit, cannot, unable, impossible, out of the question, improbable, failure, unworkable, hopeless, and retreat; for they are the words of fools. I will avoid despair but if this disease of the mind should infect me then I will work on in despair. I will toil and I will endure. I will ignore the obstacles at my feet and keep mine eyes on the goals above my head, for I know that where dry desert ends, green grass grows.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will remember the ancient law of averages and I will bend it to my good. I will persist with knowledge that each failure will increase my chance for success at the next attempt. Each nay I hear will bring me closer to the sound of yea. Each frown I meet only prepares me for the smile to come. Each misfortune I encounter will carry in it the seed of tommorrows good luck. I must have the night to appreciate the day. I must fail often to succeed only once.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will try, and try, and try again. Each obstacle I will consider as a mere detour to my goal and a challenge to my profession. I will persist and develop my skills as the mariner develops his, by learning to ride out the wrath of each storm.

I will persist until I succeed.

Nor will I allow yesterdays success to lull me into todays complacency, for this is the greatest foundation of failure. I will forget the happenings of the day that is gone, whether they were good or bad, and greet the new sun with confidence that this will be the best day of my life.

So long as there is breath in me, that long will I persist. For now I know one of the greatest principles of success; if I persist long enough I will win.

I will persist.

I will win.
Here is the (very imperfect) story I've got so far:

Before the Great Depression, investment services and commercial banking services were often dealt with by the same companies.

This led to frequent conflicts of interest and to fraud and abuse.

In the prosperous 1920s, the volume of investment and banking increased - and fraud and abuse increased as well.

In the late 1920s, there was a speculative boom. More and more people were investing in the stock market, causing prices to go higher, causing more confidence in a bullish market, causing people to buy even more stock, etc.

This led to a bubble, where stocks were highly overvalued.

Eventually, people were investing so much that they were actually taking out loans and then putting the money in the stock market.

Like all financial bubbles, this one eventually crashed in 1929, marking the beginning of the Great Depression. The stock market did not recover to pre-1929 values until 1954.

In response, FDR and the Democratic Congress passed a law in the 1930s to separate investment from banking.

Later in 1938, FDR & the Democratic Congress created a new organization, "Fannie Mae", to guarantee government-issued mortgages and provide liquidity to the mortgage market.

In 1968, LBJ & the Democratic Congress converted Fannie Mae into a private corporation, and transfered responsibility for guaranteeing gov't mortgages to a new company, Ginnie Mae.

In 1992, President George H.W. Bush and the Democratic Congress passed the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act, which mandates specific goals for Fannie Mae in regard to lending to low income individuals.

http://assembler.law.cornell.edu/usc-cgi/get_external.cgi?type=pubL&target=102-550

In 1999, President Clinton and the Republican Congress passed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which repealed the 1930s law separating investment service companies from banks.

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s106-900

Soon after, banks started merging with investment companies again, forming "financial service companies."

The merging of investment and banking again increased the incentives for banks to loan out more money than they otherwise would. The ability to auction off mortgages to others insulated these companies from risks on the microeconomic scale, making them even more eager to issue loans.

These companies also had increased incentives to loan to low-income, low-credit borrowers because of the 1992 law.

In the 2000s, there was another speculative boom. Many people began speculating and investing in real estate property, causing housing prices to rise.

As time went on, more and more people saw the bullish housing market and began to invest, further driving up prices.

Financial service companies lent more and more money to more and more people with less and less credit and income, which the people then reinvested in the housing market.

Some companies even began granting people loans without requiring any down payment at all.

This artificial increase in demand for housing led to a bubble, where homes were highly overvalued.

The invasion of Iraq and the subsequent insurgency raised tensions in the middle east, driving up oil prices. Economic progress in China and in developing nations worldwide increased demand for oil, driving up prices further.

Oil prices were driven up again when hurricanes damaged offshore oil drilling stations.

Since Americans use more oil than we can extract domestically and hence import a majority of the oil we use, higher costs meant more and more money was going out of the US economy into the economies of countries with larger oil reserves.

Transporting general goods became more expensive, causing prices on many things to go up.

People had less money to invest in houses.

The bubble popped. Housing prices started coming back down to market value.

Many people had overinvested, lost their money, and were unable to repay the loans/mortgages.

Banks/Financial service companies were unable to deal with more and more people defaulting on their loans.

In 2008, these companies started going bankrupt.

Other banks have started to become much more reluctant to loan out money, both for housing investments and general purposes.

More reluctance to loan money will mean less money to start new businesses, expand existing businesses, help students get through college, etc.

As these trends continue, the economy slows down more and more.

So, Congress decides to send $700 billion to the financial service companies who made all of the loans that they should never have made, so they stay in business and hopefully keep loaning out money, postponing the end of the market correction.

Congress' bill doesn't do anything to separate banks from investment companies again, or to discourage banks from making more high-risk loans to low-income, low-credit borrowers.

It seems kind of like writing a check out for more money than is in the checking account, getting billed for overdrafts when it gets processed, and then going to a pay-day money loan place to borrow money to put back into the checking account. Yeah, there is more money in the checking account for paying the bills, but the underlying problem hasn't been eliminated - it has been postponed and made even worse.
We have, or at least we are supposed to have, a government with three seperate divisions: executive, legislative, and judicial. The executive branch is supposed to enforce the law, the legislative branch is supposed to make the law, and the judicial branch interprets the constitutionality of the law and settles disputes. Each power is supposed to be a check on the other. The executive has all the power to enforce the law, but cannot make it. If the president doesn't like a law, he may veto it. The legislature can make the law, but cannot enforce the law and cannot make law in violation of the Constitution. The Supreme Court cannot make its own law, and cannot enforce law, but has the last say on what laws are valid and how they ought to be applied and interpreted. Simple 4th grade politics, right?

GWB, however, does not play by the rules. When he does not like a certain bill, he doesn't veto it. He has never vetoed a single law to date. Instead, he signs the bill into law. He then issues a 'signing statement', a note announcing that he is not obliged to follow the law. He insists that, as president, no law has authority over the executive because of the clause in the constitution which reads "The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." Of course, this clause was clearly not meant to mean the president is not subject to law (otherwise the constitution would not award veto powers to him because they would be meaningless.) In similar fasion, President Bush also ignores Supreme Court decisions and precedents whenever he pleases. He has already disobeyed over 750 laws since coming into office in 2001.

He believes that he can get away with this because he doesn't think the Republican-dominated Congress will stand up to him. He is right. Hopefully the Democrats will retake the House this November, in which case impeachment is a certainty. But the Democrats - even with a Senate takeover - will never garner enough votes in the Senate to actually remove him from office. So, even if he is impeached, he will still be free to do as he pleases. The level of partisanship in our country is so great that enough conservatives will continue to support him - because God forbid they don't get another anti-abortion vote on the Supreme Court.

Colbert wins

Stephen Colbert is my hero. I also believe that discrimination on account of race or sex is wrong. I don't understand why so many people believe that it is okay to use racism and sexism to fight racism and sexism.

I readily admit that women and racial minorities are still being discriminated against - and that we all have a moral responsibility to put an end to that as best we can. But to really destroy racism, we need to think of each other not as 'black' people or 'white' people, but just people. Affirmative action isn't doing that. Instead, it reinforces the ideas that it is supposed to diminish: that it is ok to treat people based on what kind of group they fit into instead of treating them based on their personal virtues, vices, accomplishments, responsibilities and handicaps.

Proponents of affirmative action claim that we must provide special opportunities and assistance to certain groups of people because they are at an economic disadvantage compared to other groups. If this is so, what is the use in providing assistance based on race or sex? Why not provide this assistance to all people at economic disadvantage? Would this not effect the same groups of people the most - because they are more disadvantaged than most - yet do so without discrimination based on race or sex?

Down with personal liberty!

New from Social Conservatism!

From the same intellectually unsound, quasi-evil ideology that brought you:

Opposition to slavery abolition

Opposition to equal rights for women

Opposition to interracial marriage

Opposition to constitutional democracy

Opposition to religious freedom

Opposition to desegregation

Opposition to condoms

Opposition to Spongebob Squarepants

Opposition to stem-cell research

...comes...

Opposition to equal rights of marriage and adoption!

SEE! How the same arguments used to oppose interracial marriage can be recycled to reduce thinking!

"Interracial Homosecksual marriage isn't right in the eyes of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!"

"It isn't a violation of equal rights, because uppity negroes fags can still get married, just not to whites gays!"

"It isn't fair for children to be raised by ungodly oreos ungodly sodomites because the children would be subjected to hate spewed by racists homophobes (like us) ! Why? A variety of poorly thought out reasons. Here are some of the common complaints people have:

"Wal-mart puts mom and pop stores out of business"

"Wal-mart pays their employees low wages"

"Wal-mart does a poor job of providing employees with health insurance"

News flash to Wal-Mart employees: You don't have to work at Wal-Mart. It isn't mandatory. Get a job somewhere else! There are no laws compelling anyone to work for Wal-Mart. Personally, I don't think anyone - excepting high school students working part-time - should work in a Wal-Mart at all. I agree, they pay low wages and don't have a good insurance program. So, just don't work there. If people would just refuse to work there, Wal-Mart would be forced to treat its employees better. However, Wal-Mart wages aren't horrifically low as many would have you believe. The average Wal-Mart Sales Associate (the most common Wal-Mart job) makes $8.23 per hour, over $3 per hour more than minimum wage. The average full-time employee makes almost $10 per hour. Also, when people point out the fact that people who work for Wal-Mart make low wages, they forget that these people would probably be working somewhere else making the same low wages if Wal-Mart weren't around. In other words, Wal-Mart isn't quite holding people back from being millionaires.

It is unfair to a law-abiding company to be specifically singled out by the government (with the exception of abusive monopolies), but that is exactly what has been happening to Wal-Mart. The state of Maryland has just passed a law mandating that all companies in the state with over 10,000 employees must spend at least 8% of their payroll on health care. Of course, Wal-Mart is the only company affected by the law. While we do need to make sure that everyone in the U.S. has health insurance, we need to do it in a way that does not specifically punish certain businesses in favor of others.

When it comes to complaints about mom and pop stores, remember that Wal-Mart doesn't shut down them down - people do, by choosing to shop elsewhere. If the people in a community want to keep their mom and pop stores and don't want a Wal-Mart, then they are free to continue shopping at those stores. You don't have to shop at Wal-Mart. Trust me; if people don't shop at a Wal-Mart, it isn't going to hang around. But most people tend to like lower prices and convenience, so they end up shopping at Wal-Mart. If you really oppose Wal-Mart enough to force them out of town through government but you still shop there you are a hypocrite and someone should drive a truck into you.

And why exactly does Wal-Mart have such low prices, anyway? Wal-Mart's size enables it to purchase goods in huge volumes for reduced prices, and they have a very efficient system in place managing inventory and buying to reduce losses from being overstocked or under stocked. It is also very careful about scheduling to reduce overtime pay, as well as cutting general costs like reducing paper consumption by using computers.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a corporate cheerleader and I know Wal-Mart has a lot of problems. But the way they have been attacked lately is just crazy.

To what extent is the government illegally spying on us?

To me, the idea that the federal government is illegally spying on us without warrants still sounds like a wacky conspiracy theory. But it is true. And I am beginning to wonder as to the extent of the spying. Former NSA employee Russell Tice told the House of Representatives that the spying program is of a much larger scope than the president has admitted. Is the spying, like the president claims, of a very limited scope, applying only to international calls – or is it much broader?

Recently, retired AT&T technician Mark Klein has come forward and submitted an affidavit alleging that AT&T has equipment set up that monitors and diverts its customers’ internet traffic and phone calls to the NSA. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has filed a class-action suit against AT&T, and has demanded that AT&T immediately cease this illegal activity. They have filed evidence that they say supports their claims, including documents explaining how the spying equipment works. Unfortunately, none of us are able to view the actual evidence for ourselves because it has been kept secret from the public.

In fact, we may never know what kind of evidence the EFF and Mark Klein have, because the case may never come to trial. The government can request that the court throw the entire suit out under the State Secrets Privilege. Hence, for the moment, we are all left to wonder whether the government is listening to our phone calls and reading our e-mails, and what it is doing – or with whom it is sharing – our information.

For anyone not yet convinced of the warrantless wiretapping program's illegality

There is simply no question that the wiretapping program is illegal. Remember Nixon and Watergate? At that time, our nation was grappling with the same questions as it now is with regard to presidential power and warrantless surveillance. It wasn't legal when Nixon did it. In fact, just so there would be no further confusion over the legality of a president or the executive branch wiretapping without warrants, Congress passed and President Carter signed a new law called the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. This act made explicit the fact that warrants are required for surveillance. The act also spells out exactly how to legally wiretap. In addition, to allow the government flexibility in cases where it didn't have time to obtain a warrant, there is a special part that allows the government to wiretap immediately w/o warrant - provided they go back to a special FISA court after the fact to a special court later to obtain one. The FISA court has granted over 18,761 and rejected only 5. Furthermore, FISA has been updated 5 times since September 11, 2001, to adapt it to the demands of wiretapping a new type of enemy.

The administration has tried claiming that it can violate FISA because congress voted to go after Al Qaeda in Afghanistan in late 2001. It has also tried to claim that the US Constitution gives the president the authority to pick and choose which laws he or she wants to follow, and which ones he or she does not want to follow. Call me crazy, but I couldn't find that part in the constitution.

For anyone wondering why average, law-abiding citizes should care that the government is spying on them without judicial oversight

Check out this animation for a peek into a world without privacy, where the government collects information about its citizens and does whatever the hell it wants:

Sprint Customer Service

Sprint just made the list. When payment is due, we are informed by a message threatening to shut off service if we don't pay. When we try to pay online, we are told that we can't because we're past due. Ditto with over the phone payment. They won't tell us where to send payment by check either, though even if they did it wouldn't make it in time not to lose our phone service. They "really understand how we feel," and unselfishly offer to send us 'another' bill for FIVE F**KING DOLLARS. Other than that, they suggest we go to the Sprint store where we will be charged FIVE F**KING DOLLARS just to pay the bill.

We both have tried to speak with customer service. Over half a dozen times. After updating our address several times over, we were informed that we did in fact recieve our bills, and if we wanted another one, too bad $5. When we asked for a supervisor, we were told that a supervisor wouldn't help us and that we wouldn't even be connected. When we asked for the name of the person we were speaking to, we were F**KING HUNG UP ON. One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered George W. Bush community of supporters when IDC confirmed that George W. Bush's IQ has dropped yet again, now down to less than 1 percent of the national average. Coming on the heels of a recent CNN survey which plainly states that George W. Bush has lost more brain cells, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. George W. Bush's cerebral cortex is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by falling dead last in a recent 2nd grade spelling bee.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict George W. Bush's future. The hand writing is on the wall: George W. Bush faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for George W. Bush because George W. Bush is a moron. Things are looking very bad for George W. Bush. As many of us are already aware, George W. Bush continues to lose popular support. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan states that there are 7000 remaining supporters worldwide of George W. Bush. How many of these supporters are Americans? Let's see. The number of all Dubya supporters versus American supporters posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 American supporters. Registered US voter posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of total American supporter posts. Therefore there are about 700 registered American voters who support George W. Bush. A recent article put non-American Bush supporters at about 80 percent of total George W. Bush supporters. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Dubya supporters. This is consistent with the number of Dubya supporter Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of the state of Texas, abysmal leadership and so on, Dubya went out of employment and was taken over by United States executive branch which runs another troubled government. Now the United States economy is also fucked up, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major polls show that George W. Bush's leadership skills and spelling abilities have steadily declined. George W. Bush's popular support is very sick and his long term prospects are very dim. If George W. Bush is to survive at all it will be among retired oil executive dilettante dabblers. George W. Bush's support continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, George W. Bush's presidency is dead.

Fact: George W. Bush is a moron

News Flash: legalizing gay marriage doesn't destroy traditional marriage

NY Times: The Normality of Gay Marriages

Strangely enough, the citizens of Massachusetts have discovered that traditional heterosexual marriage is completely unaffected by the legalization of marriage for homosexuals. After seeing firsthand the value of equal marriage rights, the same government body that passed an anti-gay marriage amendment one year ago has voted against validating it 157 to 39.

Of course, the argument that allowing monogamous homosexual couples the legal right of marriage would somehow damage traditional marriage is completely ridiculous.
